To explore the maze, use the "arrow" buttons in the upper-left corner. The hollow arrows allow you to peer briefly to left, right, or behind you. To use them, click on them and hold down the mouse until you are through "peering"; when you release the mouse, your view will return to "straight ahead". When you "peer", you aren't moving your feet; you're just standing still and craning your neck. (Try the hollow arrows first, until you get used to the view in the "Scarab of RA" window and the way it changes when you look in different directions.)
The buttons with solid curved arrows change the direction you are facing, but they don't change your location (like a soldier doing "left face, right face, about face" while otherwise standing still). These buttons are like the hollow ones, except that the solid arrows "permanently" affect your view; just click on them and your view changes until you click on some other button.
The two straight arrows move you forward and backward. These are the only buttons which change your location. To move forward, click on the up-arrow; to step backwards (without turning around) click on the down-arrow. Note that to turn a corner you must first get to the intersection, then click on a solid curved arrow to change which way you're facing, then click the up-arrow to move off in the new direction. (If this sounds confusing, just try it for a bit. It's not hard. If you hear a beep, and your view doesn't change, you are trying to walk through a wall. Change direction and try again.)
The button with the wristwatch on it lets you stand still and wait for a little – this is useful sometimes, if you are waiting for an animal to attack or run away.
You can use the digit keys on the keypad as substitutes for the arrow, watch, and "Pick Up" buttons.
